Core Curriculum Standards have one problematic, underlying assumption: Students understand, and can demonstrate, cooperative learning skills. In addition to staying focused and on-task, a child participating in small-group cooperation must practice self-regulation, stay open to the ideas of others, express his or her opinions in a friendly way, and consider the perspectives and feelings of others. These are the same skills that many children with ADHD trip over — and that make living with family members easier!
