“Organized and Motivated: A Parent’s Guide to Executive Function Fixes for Teens with ADHD” [Video Replay & Podcast #230]

In this hour-long webinar-on-demand, learn how to collaborate with your teen to build executive functions with Sharon Saline, Psy.D.

Episode Description

It’s the question on every parent’s mind: “How can I help my child become a more engaged and effective student?” Many parents are weary after struggling for years to give their kids the tools they need for academic success. You offer useful suggestions that your son promptly rejects or your daughter tries for a week and then drops. Despite your best efforts, school remains a major source of tension and frustration for everyone.

Fostering your teen’s progress at school means sharpening his or her executive functions and creating interventions based on compassion, collaboration, and consistency. When you understand how the adolescent ADHD brain works —what it’s like living with learning challenges, and what motivates and discourages teens about school — you become your child’s ally, not his or her adversary. Using a collaborative approach that empowers both of you, you establish achievable goals and work together to improve key executive functioning skills like organization, planning, and persistence. You craft solutions that make sense and appeal to your teen. With their buy-in and the use of meaningful incentives, kids are more motivated to try new tools and stick with them. As they start to see the positive effects of their efforts, teens feel competent and parents worry less.

In this webinar, you will learn how to:

  • Reduce school-related stress by taking a strength-based perspective
  • Understand the biology of the adolescent brain and why physiology matters for learning
  • Create meaningful and achievable academic goals and strategies together
  • Build effective programs for improving organization, planning, motivation, and follow through
  • Determine appropriate levels of participation in your teen’s academic life
