Episode Description

Pregnancy and childbirth are life-altering events, and it is not uncommon for postpartum mood disturbances to impact the mental health of new mothers. Studies suggest that ADHD increases the risk for experiencing postpartum mood disorders (PPMD), a form of postpartum depression (PPD), which are often triggered by dramatic hormonal fluctuations, inadequate sleep, and the new and relentless demands of caring for an infant. Postpartum symptoms may also exacerbate ADHD symptoms in some women and can impact the wellbeing of the entire family.

It is profoundly important that providers who work with new parents and families identify, understand, and support the signs and symptoms of PPD and PPMD, including attention to adequate sleep and other self-care basics, in the earliest stage of infant-parent attachment and provide treatment. It is also important for new parents and other family members to be aware of these symptoms and know when professional help is needed.

In this webinar, providers and caregivers will learn:

  • About the symptoms and causes of PPD and PPMD
  • About the importance of surveillance roughly 6 months after the baby is born, when there is typically less interaction with providers
  • About the conditions — including anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar disorder — that elevate the risk for postpartum difficulties in women
  • How family members can spot red flags for postpartum depression and seek help
  • About the treatment options that can prevent a new mother from worsening symptoms before they become full-blown PPD
  • About the importance of sleep, and how to set up a routine early on
