Episode Description
ADHD, and its presence in adults over the age of 50, has been explored in international research for the last 15 years. While newly recognized by specialists in clinical practice, ADHD is rarely considered in the diagnostic evaluation of older adults complaining of cognitive symptoms. This webinar will discuss the emerging research and the diagnostic process for evaluating older adults with possible ADHD and distinguishing it from other disorders.
The evaluation and treatment of older adults with ADHD is unique because of coexisting psychiatric and medical illnesses that can exacerbate inattention, distractibility, and disorganization. Both medications and individualized psychotherapies are effective at reducing symptoms, diminishing impairments, and improving quality of life. However, the consideration for medication is complicated by the presence of other conditions, especially cardiac disease. Emerging research suggests that ADHD is a risk factor for dementia. Therefore, the evaluation process is critical in distinguishing the different diagnostic possibilities that explain a patient’s cognitive complaints so that effective treatment options are offered.
In this webinar, you will learn:
- How we know that ADHD continues in older adults over age 50
- How ADHD is distinguished from other medical and psychiatric explanations
- About the latest findings on ADHD’s possible association with dementia
- Which treatment options work to improve daily functional ability
- How ADHD medications can be prescribed safely to older adults
