ADHD and autism share many symptoms. Yet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) allowed for ADHD and autism to be diagnosed in the same person only 11 years ago. Before 2013, the DSM did not recognize or allow for a dual diagnosis. Since then, research and clinical understanding of AuDHD have evolved.

However, we still don’t have an evidence-based, standardized approach to diagnosing and supporting adults, women, and gender-diverse individuals with AuDHD. Clinical consensus, stakeholder perspective, and increasing empirical research suggest that ADHD and autism are spectrum conditions that present differently across development and genders, making accurate diagnoses and treatment both challenging and vital.

This presentation will explain the ways in which ADHD and autism overlap and how they can present differently in children and adults — and across genders. In this webinar, you will also learn:

  • About how AuDHD is diagnosed in children and adults
  • How autism can look different from childhood to adulthood and across genders
  • About the association between autism and gender diversity
  • Why autism is so easily missed and misdiagnosed, especially in girls and women, and the consequences of that
  • About the myths and misinformation about autism in adults and girls and women
  • About what your medical and mental health providers need to know and how you can help them make an accurate diagnosis
  • Future directions in diagnosis and treatment

A cluttered, disorganized living environment is as common as it is unsettling for many people who have ADHD. Overwhelm often prevents them from even getting started on decluttering. For some people, the clutter reaches a level that compromises their ability to live safely in their homes. This is usually the result of hoarding disorder. Sometimes, it’s difficult to discern what constitutes clutter versus hoarding.

Michael Tompkins, Ph.D., will explain why the traits in ADHD contribute to excessive clutter and hoarding. He will also walk viewers through the process of managing these often-debilitating situations and employing strategies for success.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the ADHD traits and underlying causes that contribute to clutter and hoarding
  • About signs of clutter and hoarding, and red flags for when clutter turns into hoarding
  • How clutter is different from hoarding, and the characteristics that define each
  • About practical strategies to help decrease clutter and disorganization
  • How to deal with hoarding in your own living situation or with a loved one
  • How cognitive behavior therapy for ADHD and hoarding can help people manage better

Children and teens with ADHD are most likely to be bullied at school than their neurotypical peers. Why? ADHD symptoms and behaviors like impulsivity, trouble detecting social cues, low self-esteem, and executive function deficits make them easy targets.

What you might not know is that bullying and abuse can physically harm a child’s brain architecture and function. The neurological scars are visible on brain scans.

What’s empowering and inspiring is that all brains benefit from neuroplasticity, which means they are shaped by environment and by practice. Learn about the strategies that can help your child with or without ADHD better cope with and respond to bullies. The more parents, teachers, and coaches understand about how brains may suffer from bullying and abusive conduct, the better equipped they will be to prevent, protect, and respond to these harmful acts.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The ADHD symptoms and behaviors that may make children with the condition a target
  • The different forms of bullying, and the harmful physical impact that each may have on a child’s brain structure and function
  • Strategies and practices to repair the neurological scars from bullying and abuse
  • Practical and actionable interventions for strengthening the brain and restoring holistic health

Despite highly esteemed and plentiful literature on the use of stimulant and nonstimulant medication to treat ADHD, relatively little information is available on the treatment of complex ADHD — that is, attention deficit disorder plus at least one comorbid condition like anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder. Few studies address the treatment of comorbid conditions, the order of treatment, or the treatment of cognitive deficits and/or hard-to-treat ADHD symptoms.

This presentation will integrate data from controlled and open trials to highlight strategies for illustrative cases of complex ADHD. Participants will learn:

  • About new medications approved for ADHD and their use for complex and hard-to-treat ADHD
  • About strategies to manage ADHD comorbidities
  • About approaches for treating cognitive executive function deficits in ADHD

Many boys with ADHD struggle to cultivate and sustain in-person friendships. What is often referred to as “difficulty reading social cues” is the result of lagging social executive function skills, the set of tools we use when sharing space with others. Many boys feel ashamed of their social struggles and retreat into a virtual world of gaming that often intensifies feelings of social isolation from peers at school and in the community.

While many boys seem content to socialize through gaming and other forms of online communication, it doesn’t create the close connection made when boys spend time together and in person. In fact, research findings report higher rates of loneliness and depression among tween and teen boys today than in the past.

In this webinar, evidence-based strategies will be explained to help tween and teen boys build the social executive function skills needed to connect with peers and develop real-life friendships.

In this webinar, caregivers will learn:

  • How lagging social executive function skills and social anxiety present in tween and teen boys with ADHD
  • How educators can work with caregivers to help tween and teen boys struggling with social disconnectedness
  • How to support boys who are resistant to help and those who solely socialize through video games

Every month, about a week or two before menstruation, many women with ADHD experience what feels like premenstrual syndrome (PMS) — but on steroids. Symptoms include severe sadness, irritability, anxiety, mood swings, concentration difficulties, fatigue, and physical discomfort. These symptoms significantly disrupt daily life, leading to strained relationships and other difficulties.

If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition affecting individuals who are assigned as female at birth. Despite its profound impact, PMDD often goes unrecognized and untreated.

Register for our webinar with Dara Abraham, D.O., for an in-depth look at PMDD. Discover how to identify symptoms of PMDD, distinguish it from similar cyclical disorders, understand the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare, and learn about the latest advancements in treatment options and the critical need for continued research.

This webinar will delve into the intricate interplay between PMDD and ADHD, scrutinizing the roles of hormones, neurotransmitters, and genetic predispositions in the hormonal fluctuations that activate PMDD symptoms and intensify ADHD. It will underscore the importance of adopting a comprehensive strategy for identifying, diagnosing, and developing individualized treatment plans. Additionally, it will touch upon the importance of recognizing the impact of hormonal changes during key life phases, such as pregnancy and the postpartum period.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the connection between PMDD and ADHD
  • How to identify the symptoms of PMDD and differentiate it from PMS and other cyclical mood disorders
  • How to recognize individuals at an increased risk of PMDD
  • About PMDD’s association with hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to menopause
  • Comprehensive treatment strategies for PMDD and ADHD, including lifestyle modifications, pharmaceutical interventions, and nutritional support to alleviate symptoms

“ADHD Then and Now: How Our Understanding Has Evolved” [Video Replay & Podcast #447] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/history-of-adhd-diagnosis-treatment-research/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/history-of-adhd-diagnosis-treatment-research/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2023 22:10:46 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=322516 Episode Description

Over its lifetime, ADHD has been a lightning rod for controversy and for heated debates over its increasing diagnostic rates, its pharmacological treatment, and its links to factors like screen use and social media. At the same time, important advances have been made. We now understand ADHD better than ever at a neurological level, have made research-informed modifications to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and comorbid mental health disorders, and are better understanding sex differences in ADHD symptom presentation.

Today’s ADHD treatment options generally rely on tried-and-true combinations of behavioral parent training, medication, school-based consultation, and social and organizational skills training. Some new treatment options — diet, exercise, neurofeedback, and digital training programs — have inspired hope for breakthrough interventions but have been largely unable to deliver on their promise. However, as the stigma surrounding ADHD decreases, and as we increase our understanding across the lifespan, we should feel great optimism for what the next 25 years could hold for children, teens, and adults with ADHD.

In this webinar, Dave Anderson, Ph.D., will highlight the setbacks and successes in advancing the understanding of ADHD over the past 25 years, and will discuss the ways in which ADHD advocates can work toward accelerating positive trends in this field for the next quarter century.

In this webinar, parent, caregivers, and professionals will learn:

  • Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD over the past 25 years
  • How media and societal narratives have helped and hindered the understanding of ADHD
  • Where the science of ADHD and our understanding of ADHD across the lifespan stands now

“Borderline Personality Disorder & Its Connection to ADHD” [Video Replay & Podcast #446] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/borderline-personality-disorder-symptoms-treatment-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/borderline-personality-disorder-symptoms-treatment-adhd/#respond Tue, 07 Feb 2023 20:45:42 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=321843 Episode Description

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation, an unstable self-image, and interpersonal problems — all symptoms associated with ADHD as well. In fact, studies show that 20 to 40 percent of people with BPD also have ADHD. Because the two disorders share overlapping symptoms, clinicians may misdiagnose one for the other and inadvertently prescribe an ineffective treatment plan.

This webinar will focus on understanding BPD, differentiating the BPD symptoms that mimic ADHD, and understanding ADHD-specific risk factors of developing BPD. Treatment recommendations will also be reviewed.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to identify the symptoms of BPD
  • How to differentiate between BPD and ADHD symptoms
  • How to identify ADHD-specific risk factors for developing BPD
  • About treatment recommendations for comorbid ADHD and BPD

“When ADHD Triggers Emotional Outbursts: Scripts for Your Flashpoints (Part Two)” [Video Replay & Podcast #444] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-control-your-emotions-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-control-your-emotions-adhd/#comments Wed, 18 Jan 2023 23:01:01 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=320744 Episode Description

This webinar is Part Two in a series. Part One is available for replay at https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/anger-management-outbursts-adhd-triggers/

ADHD brings with it strong emotions — but few tools for managing those emotions in ways that feel good. Your ADHD brain, with its now vs. not-now orientation, may not register feelings simmering under the surface, so when the pressure builds and those emotions demand attention, the dam bursts. Your brain becomes suddenly flooded and you begin thrashing around trying to keep your head above water.

In these difficult moments of an amygdala hijack, the thinking brain goes offline and emotions rule the day. It can be really tough to regain control over yourself or a situation. Whether prompted by fear, anger, hurt, or disappointment, we sometimes say or do things impulsively that we later regret. To change these patterns, we must first learn how to identify and respond to triggers without self-criticism. This is the path forward for nurturing radical self-acceptance and creating satisfying interpersonal connections.

In this webinar, Dr. Sharon Saline will answer your questions about using tools from cognitive behavioral therapy, internal family systems, brain science, and mindfulness to help you discover how to work with your triggers, make intentional choices about words and actions, collaborate on recovering from blow-ups, and make meaningful amends. You will learn how to distinguish between issues that are true emergencies and those that may seem critical but don’t require an immediate response. She will help you build skills that increase body-based awareness, employ neutral language to express your feelings and thoughts, and practice compassion toward yourself and others during the most taxing times. You’ll walk away with a strategic plan for dealing with your feelings and the reactions of others with less stress and more compassion.

The learning objectives of this webinar include:

  1. Answer your questions (submitted during Part One of this webinar and live) about controlling and communicating emotions in the moment
  2. Offer solutions to promote greater body-based awareness and key language tools to intervene with flooding, rejection sensitivity, and frustration
  3. Construct useful phrases and actions for managing dysregulation in self and others
  4. Practice and employ key elements of radical self-acceptance

“‘Invisible’ Disabilities at Work: How to Foster Neurodivergent Advocacy and Acceptance” [Video Replay & Podcast #443] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/invisible-disabilities-adhd-accommodations-at-work/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/invisible-disabilities-adhd-accommodations-at-work/#comments Tue, 17 Jan 2023 18:13:52 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=320622 Episode Description

Do you question whether to disclose to your employer that you have ADHD, autism, a learning disorder, a chronic condition, or another so-called “invisible disability?” Do you worry that disclosing an impairment might affect your job security or make you feel disconnected from your colleagues? When you’re interviewing for a job, do you know how best to gauge whether an organization will fit your needs?

Many employees expend considerable emotional energy hiding their disabilities from colleagues and bosses in every interaction at work, in every meeting, and when toiling away side-by-side. It’s exhausting and stressful. But the stigma around disabilities — the fear of discrimination and rejection, and the risk related to job security — prevents many employees from disclosing their condition and asking for supports and accommodations to succeed at work.

Yet studies show that when employers intentionally create an atmosphere of acceptance and show a commitment to build inclusion — offering disability awareness training and creating employee resource groups as a safe place for people with disabilities, chronic conditions, or difficult life situations to meet and support one another — employees no longer feel threatened to reveal a disability. Instead, they take advantage of employer-provided supports, which, in turn, improves their wellbeing, increases their level of trust in others, and boosts their productivity.

In this webinar, Jessica Hicksted, Ph.D. candidate, ADHD researcher, and employee who has autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, explores how to approach disclosure in the workplace and provides research-driven strategies that cultivate acceptance from colleagues and supervisors.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About questions to ask during a job interview to try to determine whether a company has a culture of acceptance and diversity
  • How masking in the workplace inhibits executive functioning skills
  • About strategies to determine whether and how to disclose a disability in the workplace
  • About approaches to help you advocate for workplace policies that support people with invisible disabilities
  • About innovative research that helps companies become more aware of invisible disabilities among employees, and create policies that foster diversity and acceptance

“Choosing the Best Summer Camps for Your ADHD Child: A Guide for Parents” [Video Replay & Podcast #442] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/best-summer-camps-kids-adhd/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/best-summer-camps-kids-adhd/#respond Mon, 19 Dec 2022 14:46:17 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=318581 Episode Description

Summer camp can be a rewarding and confidence-building experience for kids with ADHD. But when day or sleep-away camps aren’t prepared to adequately support children and teens with ADHD, problems arise. Kids with ADHD struggle, and in some cases, they are asked to leave the program.

To avoid these and other problems, it’s important that families know how to find the best camps for their child with ADHD, including which questions to ask, and how to support the camp staff in setting up their children for success.

In this webinar, Ryan Wexelblatt, LCSW, founder and director of ADHD Dude & Trip Camp, will provide caregivers with practical approaches that will help them make an educated decision about the best summer camp for their child, and strategies that will help set their camper up for success.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • What to consider when selecting a camp
  • What questions to ask camp administrators to determine whether the camp can support your child
  • How much information to share about your child with the camp staff, and how to support the camp staff
  • Why overnight camp can be great for kids with ADHD, and why starting at a younger age can help ensure success at overnight camp
  • About the common problems that occur at camp for kids with ADHD, and strategies to be proactive in addressing them
  • Why having 1:1 support at camp is not helpful
